A proposal to combine two flats within a converted pub into a single apartment by using a portion of the commonly owned staircase. Based upon the idea of a garden gate, privacy is provided by a new doorway whilst daylighting to the stairwell below is maintained through the use of translucent materials. To provide a new landing for the ‘gate’ a supplementary portion of staircase constructed as a piece of timber joinery sits over the existing terrazzo steps.
